Boston Blue Season 1 Episode 19 Did Trauma Justice During An Intense But Compelling Case

That was an intense case, but it hurt in all the right ways.

Boston Blue Season 1 Episode 19 is far from the first police drama to feature a case about a stalker who wants to kill as many cops as possible — but many shows make it more about catching the killer than about how it affects the cops.

This time, we got both, and it wasn’t at all sensationalized or exploitative. Plus, it set several things in motion for the season finale.

Boston Blue Season 1 Episode 19 Explored Sean’s Survivor’s Guilt

From the moment Sean and Jonah parted ways with Steve and Rachel, I knew something terrible would happen.

There was no other reason for this long, lighthearted conversation about which bakery would be better, especially since the scene ended with Steve and Rachel having to take a call that Sean and Jonah usually would have handled.

I wasn’t expecting a fake call to ambush the cops, but nevertheless, it was inevitable that someone would get hurt, and that Sean would blame himself for insisting that the other team cover his section.

Boston Blue Season 1 Episode 19 took its time getting there, but it didn’t forget Sean — and the fallout was worth the wait.

The strongest aspect of this was not Sean’s guilt per se. That was a given, although of course, it isn’t completely fair to Sean.

He had no way of knowing that there was a fatal trap in store, and of course, if Sean was the one who had been killed, it would have left Danny grieving instead of Steve’s widow, which would not have been any better.

Trauma is like that. It bypasses logic and leaves the person with feelings and memories that they don’t know what to do with.

But Boston Blue Season 1 Episode 19 wasn’t just about Sean’s trauma. It was about Danny dealing with his son’s semi-unraveling, which put both father and son in an uncomfortable position.

Danny has been here before, but not to this degree. When Sean witnessed a car explosion that killed a witness, Danny encouraged him to talk, warning him that keeping it all inside would make things worse.

This time, talking wasn’t enough. Sean didn’t believe Danny’s words when Danny reassured him it wasn’t his fault.

His grief was mixed with anger at the perp, which meant Danny had to actively stop Sean from crossing a line that he couldn’t uncross. That led to a powerful confrontation between father and son — the one that I knew would be strong from the moment I saw the trailer with Danny snapping at Sean to be better than him.

I also loved Danny’s conversation with Edwin. Danny not only doesn’t know how to be the father in this position, but is also isolated from the rest of his family.

Had this happened in New York, all the Reagans would have supported him and Sean through this, but in Boston, Danny had far fewer resources and had to mostly feel his way through this mess.

If there was one thing that was missing, it was the connection to the Reagan family’s past tragedies.

Joe Reagan’s death has been a shadow hanging over the Reagan family since the Blue Bloods pilot episode, yet Danny and Sean never thought of him for a second. Nor did they think about Linda, whose death should have left an even bigger hole when Danny had to support Sean on his own.

Ben Silver was gunned down in front of the courthouse, so it also seemed weird that the Silvers weren’t thinking about him during this time.

Even more poignant: Lena and Mae were still mostly on the outs during Boston Blue Season 1 Episode 19.

The threat of someone killing any cop at any time, coupled with Lena actively participating in attempting to catch the guy in the act, had to have been terrifying for Mae. If Lena got shot, she could die before she and Mae could fix things between them.

That had to be a terrifying, painful proposition for Mae, although she was preoccupied with a political problem at work.

I loved that Mae wanted to be more lenient with a young person who hadn’t actually fired the fatal shot in a robbery, and it was infuriating that her subordinate disobeyed her in order to get a political advantage.

The DA’s race conflict felt so big that I had to double-check if Boston Blue Season 1 Episode 19 was the season finale.

It’s not — we have one more coming — but the DA’s race seemed so grand-scale that it very well could have sustained interest over a long, hot, TV-less summer, especially coupled with Lena skipping Shabbat dinner to call her biological father.
