Inside the Sound of Kim Kay: The Creative Force Behind “Animal”

Inside the Sound of Kim Kay: The Creative Force Behind “Animal”

Behind every great record is a room.

Sometimes it’s crowded. Sometimes it’s chaotic. And sometimes it’s a carefully chosen group of writers and producers who understand exactly where an artist wants to go.

For Kim Kay, that room has helped shape a musical evolution that now leads straight to the dance floor.

With her new single “Animal,” released September 10, 2026, Kim Kay steps confidently into EDM, delivering a record built for movement, energy and late-night speakers. But the transition isn’t nearly as sudden as it might appear. The foundation was already being built on her 2025 EP, Life in Reverse, where sophisticated pop songwriting began colliding with the electronic instincts that would eventually move to the forefront.

And behind that evolution is an impressive creative team.

Released July 8, 2025, through Belgian Bed Records, Life in Reverse featured three songs — “Ordinary Love,” “Wrong Reasons,” and “Od on U” — written by Kim Van Hee, David Schoenwetter, Eric Sanicola and Jeroen Geerinck.

Schoenwetter and Sanicola also served as producers, bringing a formidable combination of pop experience and dance-floor credibility into Kim Kay’s musical world.

David Schoenwetter: Where Pop Meets the Dance Floor

New York-based producer, songwriter, mixing and mastering engineer David Schoenwetter brings two musical identities into the studio.

As a producer and engineer, his work has crossed genres and generations, with credits connected to artists including Norah Jones, Yoko Ono, Death Cab for Cutie and the Gipsy Kings.

But electronic music fans may know another side of him.

Performing as INViDA, Schoenwetter has built a presence in dance music as a Beatport-charting DJ and electronic artist. His records have received support from major names including Tiësto, Hardwell and Don Diablo, with releases appearing on labels including Ultra Records, Revealed and Smash The House.

That combination makes him particularly well suited to Kim Kay’s evolving sound. He understands the precision of a polished pop record, but he also understands what happens when that record hits a club at full volume.

Eric Sanicola: More Than Two Decades of Pop Instinct

Then there is Eric Sanicola, whose career brings another dimension to the room.

Sanicola has spent more than two decades writing and producing music, with credits associated with Gold and Platinum projects and artists including One Direction, Dizzee Rascal, Big Time Rush, Cascada, Paulina Rubio and Bishop Briggs.

His entry into the music business came remarkably early. At 18, lyrics he had written for Jennifer Lopez caught the attention of producer Ric Wake, leading to a publishing and production deal and the beginning of a career that would eventually take him into some of pop music’s most successful creative circles.

Sanicola also spent three years writing and producing at RedOne Productions, placing him inside a hitmaking environment responsible for some of the defining pop sounds of its era.

For Kim Kay, that experience brings something invaluable: an instinct for the hook.

A Sound Built Together

But Life in Reverse wasn’t simply the product of two veteran producers.

With Kim Van Hee and Jeroen Geerinck completing the songwriting team, the EP became a genuinely collaborative project — several creative voices working toward one recognizable identity.

That identity was already pointing toward dance music.

“Ordinary Love” didn’t remain confined to its original form. The track received a radio edit as well as remixes from Paul Morrell, Ralph Wegner and Morlando, allowing the song to move from pop into club territory without losing its emotional core.

In retrospect, that was a clue.

Kim Kay wasn’t abandoning one sound to chase another. She was discovering how much bigger her music could become.

Then Came “Animal”

With “Animal,” those dance-floor instincts are no longer sitting quietly in the background.

They’ve taken over.

The new single pushes Kim Kay further into EDM while maintaining the melodic accessibility that has been central to her music. It’s bigger, bolder and more physical — the kind of record designed to be felt as much as heard.

And perhaps that’s what makes this chapter interesting.

Kim Kay’s evolution hasn’t happened in isolation. It has developed inside a creative room filled with people who understand pop songwriting, electronic production, melody, rhythm and the strange chemistry required to turn all of those ingredients into something listeners actually remember.

The names behind the record may have impressive résumés.

But ultimately, the voice coming out of that room belongs to Kim Kay.

And with “Animal,” she sounds ready to turn the volume up.

“Animal” is out now.

Kim Kay’s “ANIMAL” is available now on Spotify and other major streaming platforms.
