The end of Sheriff Country Season 1, Episode 17 hit us with a real blow, though it wasn’t surprising given how dumb the growers were acting.
Now we get to see the DEA crackdown, with the threat Dawson promised against Edgewater.
Little did anyone realize that it would lead to Mickey Fox needing a damn good lawyer of her own, as we close in on the final episodes of Sheriff Country Season 1.

Dawson Wasn’t Lying About Force
As Dawson learned in Sheriff Country Season 1 Episode 17, the money was being stolen, and he warned Mickey that Edgewater wasn’t ready for the force the DEA was going to throw at it.
Well, he wasn’t lying, as the latest episode of the series jumps into that show of force.
Growers who have been linked to the co-op are rounded up, and it feels almost like some sort of dystopian TV series.
Were they even read their rights? Maybe I missed that part, but it felt like the feds just rolled in and went on the offensive, threatening everything in Edgewater.

Of course, the DEA had to do this. After all, we see that one person manages to get away because they see the writing on the wall.
If the DEA hadn’t acted fast, more of the growers would have escaped, and that could have made the operation a whole lot harder.
In the end, Wes sees what all this is doing to Mickey and to the town, and he realizes that he can’t just sit back.
And that’s not because Luna had turned on him.
I was impressed and surprised to see that the growers did band together.

With not getting to see too much of them throughout Sheriff Country Season 1, I feared that someone like Tanner would blab.
They had become a team, and there was loyalty among the criminals.
Now, if only someone had thought about removing a star or two from the collar of the police uniform — I told you that the growers seemed a little dumb during the previous installment!
It was on his watch that Mickey and Boone grabbed the money in the first place, and because of that, the DEA crackdown hit hard.
So, he had to step up.

Initially, he was going to run, and if this was before Sheriff Country even got started, we would have likely seen that happen.
Remember how he wanted to run away with Skye when she came back home covered in blood?
He didn’t want to risk her being railroaded into admissions of guilt, given what he knew about the system.
That Wes would have run as soon as the DEA moved in, knowing that he couldn’t go through doing time again.
However, Wes is on his way to becoming a man of honor, and he’s finally thinking of the people around him.

The fact that he calls Travis to relay all the information first is a clear sign of change, and it ties back to Travis being the one he turned to for help with becoming a legal grower.
He trusts his former son-in-law to help him legally through this, and he also knows that Travis won’t judge him completely but will support him.
The DEA Is About to Come Down on Mickey Hard
What Wes didn’t realize was that his actions would reflect directly on his daughter.
How could Mickey live with one of the illegal weed growers right under her nose without realizing?

Now, in reality, we all know how that can happen.
Some people are experts at hiding their true colors, and Wes has had plenty of experience hiding his weed-growing business.
I get a sense that Dawson realizes that Mickey genuinely had no idea what her father was up to.
He saw the pain in her memory of losing her mom, all because of her father’s actions.
There have been plenty of mentions of Mickey’s past and the fact that her mom died at a young age, but this is the first time we really get the weight of what happened.

It was all foreshadowing for what was to come at the end of the hour, as well.
Mickey’s mom was arrested along with Wes because she had to have known something. She had to be involved in Wes’s illegal operation.
Now, I’m not sure if she was, as we’re hearing the story from a woman who was just around six at the time of the arrest.
It’s possible that Wes’s mom did know something and stayed quiet, but that doesn’t justify a daughter not getting a chance to say goodbye to her mom.
Those last memories were lasting, and the emotional speech that Dawson witnessed makes me think that he knows Mickey wouldn’t stand by her dad if she found out the truth.

Others don’t know her, though, and the DEA’s Deputy Director is doing the right thing.
I think we could all admit, if we were being impartial, that an investigation would be needed.
I know that other agencies going after our favorite teams and threatening characters is one of the most eye-rollingly used tropes on TV, but in this case, it makes sense and sets up some interesting final hours.
Now, that doesn’t mean something is going to happen to Mickey, but the circumstances led to this.
Wes should have considered what his actions would do to his daughter, considering everything that happened to his wife.

And so, it leaves Edgewater in a state of limbo for a while, and Mickey will need a damn good lawyer.
Maybe it’s a good thing that she just happened to save the life of one during Sheriff Country Season 1 Episode 17, and that she was once married to one!
I do get a sense that the prosecutor from the earlier episodes of the season will show up again and lay it on thick about how terrible the Fox family is, though.
He was more than happy to take an innocent girl down, and now he has Wes right where he wants him!
One thing this whole arc is doing is continuing to support my reasoning behind why Sheriff Country is performing so well.

Each problem creates a new problem, allowing plenty of storylines to breathe.
Chit Chat from the Bullpen
- I would love to see something more between Gina and Wes during Sheriff Country Season 2.
- I’m so glad that Mickey returned the feelings of love for Boone, but in a platonic way. It’s okay to have platonic relationships on TV!
- I almost forgot that the land-buying scheme was going on alongside the drug bust, so hopefully it gets more time in the next episode.
- Morena Baccarin killed it as she made the arrest and fought hard to stay composed until she was in the office.
Let’s hear it from all of you!
This is your chance to sound off with what you loved and didn’t quite love about the latest hour of Sheriff Country. Feel free to get into it — respectfully, of course! — and let’s get the conversation flowing.
