The Lion King’ Set For Imax Release

Film News

Two more movies this holiday season will land Imax screens: Disney’s Moana 2 and Mufasa: The Lion King.

Moana 2 opens on November 27, the traditional Disney slot that’s the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, while Lion King prequel Mufasa: The Lion King will open on December 20.

The 2019 The Lion King saw $63 million earned in Imax worldwide from its $1.66 billion global box office haul.

Note there will be sharing of Imax screens over the Thanksgiving stretch: Paramount’s Gladiator II opens on Friday, November 22, which will be in the pole position with Imax screens and is already advertising the large format in ads. Also don’t discount Universal’s Wicked, which is opening on the same date. Triple note that both movies were filmed for Imax. It will be interesting to see how this shakes out.

Also opening December 20 is Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Other upcoming titles shot in Imax are Warner Bros’ Joker: Folie à Deux on October 4 and Sony’s Venom: The Last Dance on October 25.

Imax recently closed one of their highest-grossing third quarters ever at the global box office. Through September 16, Imax delivered more than $225 million at the global box office in the period, driven by Disney/Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine and Disney/20th Century Studios’ Alien: Romulus.

With $84 million in Imax receipts worldwide, Deadpool & Wolverine is the company’s fifth highest-grossing Marvel title ever. Alien: Romulus is the highest-grossing horror film of all time in Imax with $40 million.
