Sony is going with its co-production of Mamoru Hosoda‘s Scarlet on December 12, joining 20th Century Studios’ James L. Brooks movie Ella McKay and Focus Features’ Chloe Zhao pic Hamnet on that date on the 2025 calendar.

Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron opened during the second frame of December 2023. Not only was it a prime place to launch an awards-season anime title, but that movie went on to clear a three-day gross of $13 million, ending its stateside run at $46.8M.
Sony Pictures is co-financing the anticipated Scarlet, from the Oscar-nominated Mirai filmmaker, with Studio Chizu and Nippon TV. It is also handling global on Scarlet except for Japan, where it is being released by Toho.
Producers are Yuichiro Saito and Nozomu Takahashi for Studio Chizu and Toshimi Tanio for Nippon TV.
In 2011, Hosoda and producer Yuichiro Saito co-established Studio Chizu, an animation studio where he directed and wrote the screenplay for Wolf Children (2012) and The Boy and the Beast (2015). His work on Mirai (2018) scored an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature. His most recent film, Belle (2021), was selected for the Cannes Première section at the 74th Cannes Film Festival and went on to be his biggest box office success with $65 million worldwide.
