UPDATED: As it’s early January, we are still largely in holdover mode. But that shouldn’t discount the performance of those movies that released at the end of last year and are still doing solid business. Among them are Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King and Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Also, as previously noted, Moana 2 has surfed past $1B global.
For its part, Mufasa roared in with another $20.3M this session, in 52 overseas markets. The international total through Sunday is $382.2M for $588M global. In its 5th offshore weekend, the dip was 31%. The Top 5 markets to date are: France ($35.9M), UK ($32.6M), Mexico ($26.8M), Germany ($26.3M) and Italy ($22.6M).
As for Paramount’s super Sonic, it’s now set a new record as the franchise’s highest-grossing title with $420M global through Sunday, besting the $405M of Sonic 2. Of that, $203.5M is from 64 offshore markets. The holdover drop was 36% internationally this session, during which it added $15.2M.
Turkey and Philippines had great starts this frame for the best of the series. Holds have been solid elsewhere and the Top 5 markets to date are: UK ($27.7M), Mexico ($20.2M), France ($17.3M), Brazil ($11.2M) and Australia ($15.5M).
Universal/Focus’ Nosferatu is still grabbing audiences by the neck with $7.7M from 65 offshore markets this session. That takes the international total to $66.2M and global to $155.6M. Nosferatu is Robert Eggers’ highest-grossing film internationally, and the director’s biggest film of all time in 57 markets to date including UK & Ireland, Mexico, Italy, Spain, Germany, Australia, France, Korea and Brazil.
The Top 5 so far are: UK ($13.4M), Mexico ($7.1M), Italy ($4.9M), Spain ($4.7M) and Australia ($4.1M).
Studiocanal’s Paddington in Peru expanded into a further 23 markets via Sony, taking the total to 34 in play. The weekend generated $6.2M to lift the overseas cume to $72.8M.
Released in November in the UK via Studiocanal, the threequel has grossed $43.3M there; more markets board the journey through this month and next.
