Justin Vernon has officially released “Hazelton,” a song that he recorded between July 2005 and May 2006 and that he would eventually transform into Bon Iver’s “Holocene.” It’s one of two tracks from the forthcoming DeYarmond Edison box set that’s being released today; the other is “Liner.” Hear both songs below.
Vernon first shared “Hazelton” and “Liner” on handmade CD-Rs in 2006. The solo music apparently contributed to the dissolution of DeYarmond Edison—Vernon’s Raleigh band with Phil and Brad Cook and Joe Westerlund.
Vernon, the Cooks, and Westerlund are revisiting their early music with Epoch, which comes out on August 18 via Jagjaguwar. The 83-track release features music from DeYarmond Edison, Justin Vernon, Megafaun, and more.
Bon Iver are headlining this year’s Pitchfork Music Festival at Union Park in Chicago on Sunday, July 23. Tickets are on sale now.
