Spotify Is Ending Heardle

The company purchased the music trivia game less than a year ago

Less than a year after buying Heardle, Spotify has announced it’s ending the music trivia game. It will no longer be available to play starting on May 5. “After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to say goodbye to Heardle as we focus our efforts on other features for music discovery,” a Spotify spokesperson said in a statement today. Heardle was created as a spin on Wordle, giving users six chances to guess a song based on the first few seconds of music that open the track.

Though Spotify formally announced their decision today, Heardle players started to receive notifications about its demise earlier in the week, reports Billboard. “Thanks for playing Heardle, but unfortunately we have to say goodbye. From May 5th, Heardle will no longer be available,” the messages read, along with a suggestion to “take a screenshot by May 4th” to save personal stats.

Spotify purchased Heardle in July 2022. At the time, the company described the acquisition as an “innovative and playful ways to enhance music discovery and help artists reach new fans.” Jeremy Erlich, Spotify’s global head of music, expanded on that in a press release: “Heardle has proven to be a really fun way to connect millions of fans with songs they know and love and with new songs… and a way to compete with their friends as to who has the best musical knowledge. Since its debut, the game has quickly built a loyal following, and it aligns with our plans to deepen interactivity across the Spotify ecosystem.”
