Angel Bat Dawid has announced the new album Requiem for Jazz, which is set for a March 24 release via International Anthem. The composer, clarinetist, singer, and educator has also shared the visual for the lead single “Recordare-Recall the Joy.” The video is by Cyrus Moussavi. Dawid’s new album, according to a press release, is a 12-movement suite that was partly inspired by dialogue from Edward O. Bland’s 1959 film, The Cry of Jazz. “I want us to have this very wonderful conversation that Ed Bland started over 50 years ago and I want to continue the conversation; because this is a loving conversation that we need to have with each other,” Dawid remarked in a statement.
Dawid composed, arranged, conducted, and mixed the music on Requiem for Jazz. She premiered music from the album at Chiacgo’s Hyde Park Jazz Festival in 2019. The record has additional contributions from Sun Ra Arkestra’s Marshall Allen and Knoel Scott, along with pianist Dr. Charles Joseph Smith, alto saxophonist Fred Jackson Jr., clarinetist Hannah Washington, vocalists Tremaine Parker, Monique Golding, Deacon Julian Otis Cooke, and Phillip Armstrong, percussionist Vincent Davis, and many others.
Angel Bat Dawid made her International Anthem debut in 2019 with The Oracle. She’s since shared Live and 2021’s Hush Harbor Mixtape, Vol. 1: Doxology.
