Red Hot Chili Peppers will perform and receive the Global Icon Award at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards. In their first appearance since receiving the Video Vanguard Award in 2000, the Peppers will join performers including J Balvin, Lizzo, and Blackpink at the ceremony, which will be emceed by LL Cool J, Nicki Minaj, and Jack Harlow. It takes place at 8 p.m. on Sunday, August 28, at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

Red Hot Chili Peppers returned yesterday with “Tippa My Tongue,” the first single from the band’s second album of 2022. The Unlimited Love follow-up is titled Return of the Dream Canteen and it’s out October 14. As with its predecessor, Rick Rubin produced the new record.

Harlow is also performing at the 2022 VMAs, as are Måneskin, Anitta, Panic! at the Disco, and Khalid and Mashmello, the latter two in collaboration. Nicki Minaj will receive the Video Vanguard Award. Nominees include Kendrick Lamar, Lil Nas X, Harlow, Doja Cat, Harry Styles, Billie Eilish, and Drake, among others.

Red Hot Chili Peppers’ tour of the United States in support of Unlimited Love is under way, with the Strokes and Thundercat opening on most dates. St. Vincent takes the Strokes’ spot for the September 9 stop in Boston.
