Shakira will be the recipient of the Video Vanguard Award and perform at the 2023 MTV VMAs, which takes place on September 12. It marks the first time the award has gone to a South American artist. Last year, Nicki Minaj received the honor. Other past honorees include Beyoncé, Madonna, Rihanna, Missy Elliott, Kanye West, Justin Timberlake, and Britney Spears.
Following her 2020 Super Bowl Halftime Show performance with Jennifer Lopez, Shakira has released multiple singles, including collaborations with Rauw Alejandro, Anuel AA, Black Eyed Peas, Karol G, Bizarrap, and Ozuna.
Taylor Swift and SZA lead the charge with the most nominations at this year’s show, followed by Olivia Rodrigo, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, and Doja Cat. Demi Lovato and Karol G are among the artists who are set to perform this year at Newark, New Jersey’s Prudential Center.
