Frozen II: Evan Rachel Wood to Voice Anna and Elsa’s Mother

It’s time to return to Arendelle!

It’s been almost six years since Frozen stole our hearts (and a good portion of our sanity, honestly), but Disney has finally released some information from the highly-anticipated sequel, Frozen II, at the Walt Disney Studios panel at the D23 Expo 2019.

The official trailer released in June featured Elsa (Idina Menzel) facing the harrowing challenge of climbing some massive waves armed with nothing but her powers, as well as a preview for another epic journey for her, Anna (Kristen Bell), and Kristoff (Jonathan Groff). Now, we’ve seen some exclusive footage of the new film, which previews dark times on the horizon for Elsa and Anna.

Walt Disney Animation CCO Jennifer Lee and co-director Chris Buck previewed the upcoming film, announcing the return of Elsa and Anna’s parents in the second film (in minimal roles), with Evan Rachel Wood voicing their mother, Queen Iduna. Fans were treated to an enticing sneak peek of Iduna singing to Anna and Elsa as children. Additional scenes teased were a potentially failed proposal from Kristoff to an oblivious Anna, a mysterious “voice” calling to Elsa, and another power ballad from Elsa, titled, “Into the Unknown,” where she struggles with her powers, which appear to be growing stronger.

Buck and Lee also revealed that the story will “start in the past,” though they remained firm that the end Frozen will work together with Frozen II to form one complete story. Finally, Sterling K. Brown attended the Expo to announce his new character, Lieutenant Mattias, who shares a scene with Anna on the group’s journey, in which they talk about major life changes and how to deal with them.

Also announced at the panel was the return of Oscar-winning songwriters Kristen Anderson Lopez and Bobby Lopez, so we can definitely expect more jams in the sequel!

Frozen II hits theaters Friday, Nov. 22.
